Please define how questions are sorted

I am very confused on how the questions are sorted. 'What are the best FREE and OPENSOURCE for PHP editing in Windows ?' is at the top but has not had a new answer in two days. 'What's the best code editor for OS X?' had a new answer 4 hours ago but is on the second page.

Questions that have a best answer don't indicate when the last answer was posted. The question could have received a new answer after the best answer was selected there is no way to tell unless I keep track of how many answers the question had before.

In the activity list on the home page, can you put a time stamp on the last answered/asked items so I know approximately when they were changed? If it was changed in the last 10 minutes, I might want to look at it. If it's been 4 hours, probably not.

Well i think its good that unanswered Questions are on top. these are the Problems to solve! not the ones who are already solved.

i'm curious about the formula too. if i answer a question, i'm still on the front page even though someone after me answers. this is weird. +1
